Organized by the Water Tribune, this round table, which took place at the Cervantes Institute of Stockholm, focused on the sustainable management of water resources. Gathered for the round table were Mr. Anders Berntell, director of the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), Mr. Jan Lundqvist, professor at the University of Linköping and president of SIWI’s scientific committee, and Mr. Eduardo Mestre, director of the Water Tribune of Expo Zaragoza 2008.
The concept of sustainable management of water resources is generally linked to that of environmental sustainability. This round table event analysed the elements that are part and parcel of sustainable and integrated management of water resources, taking into account scientific and technical concerns as well as social and environmental.
There is much debate about the various factors that are relevant to the management and governance of water resources, among them the creation of an appropriate institutional framework, the implementation of efficient mechanisms for coordination and participation, but also the legislation and policies that must be upheld. The ultimate goal of this meeting was to establish a solid knowledge base that will allow the development of a sustainable mode of water resources management.
