In the Mediterranean region, water is a rare resource, unevenly distributed both in space and over time. The situation is worsened by overexploitation and resource degradation; this hinders economic growth, negatively impacts the poorest of the world’s people, threatens globally important aquatic ecosystems, and places future generations in jeopardy. The traditional response to increases in demand for water has been to increase water supply; however, this is no longer tenable as water supplies are reaching critical levels. Nearly all riverine countries in the Mediterranean basin are now facing growing social, economic, and ecological challenges. The 7th Forum aimed to look at these challenges, and examine methods for achieving sustainable water use in the region.
